How do inversions benefit us? All the evidence points to one principal; they upend one’s relationship to gravity. Gravity has a profound effect on the physiological processes of the human body. Gravity slowly but surely weighs us down and saps our strength. We stand, sit, or walk with head above the heart, legs and pelvis underneath. While we work on perfecting posture in our classes, the damage of this position wears on our body. Subcutaneous fat sags. Varicose veins and hemorrhoids erupt. Weary of incessantly pumping blood through its vast circulatory network, the heart can falter.

In class, we can upend our sense of balance (which ultimately is determined by the vestibular system of the inner ear and calibrated to minute fluid movements), by using asanas and out beautiful rope walls to halt gravity’s power and stop the ravages of that force for a little while at least.

When we turn ourselves upside-down (have your heart higher than your head), we work to eradicate back pain and eventually even train our bodies to breathe deeper and more efficiently. Remaining in an inverted posture for 3 to 5 minutes allows the blood to drain quickly to the heart, as well as promoting tissue fluids to flow more efficiently into the veins and lymph channels of the lower extremities and of the abdominal and pelvic organs.
